Here are the stories of the luckiest lotto players who got an amazing opportunity to turn their lives around after winning the most staggering jackpots of 2015.
1. Three winners share the third highest prize in Powerball history
The biggest jackpot of 2015 actually started rolling over all the way back in November 2014 and continued to do so for a whole three months. It was finally scooped on February 11th when three ticket holders matched all the winning numbers, snatching the historic $564.000.000 jackpot. The prize was shared by an anonymous Puerto Rico resident, TL Management Trust from Texas and Marie Holmes from North Carolina.
Even though the first two winners choose to keep a low profile after collecting their $188.000.000 share, Ms. Holmes’ name was all over the press months after she claimed the prize. She’s taken a lot of criticism for spending millions of dollars for bailing her fiancé out of jail – he was arrested again few days ago and is being held under a $12.000.000 bond. Not all her money went that way – after claiming her prize Holmes said she intends to put some of it towards charity and did so last month when she donated nearly $700.000 to her church.
2. Three Rivers woman retires early after winning $310.000.000
“It’s wonderful to know that my kids will be taken care of and won’t have to work like I did. They’ll be able to enjoy life, and that makes me incredibly happy,” said Julie Leach after collecting a $310.000.000 Powerball prize she won on September 30th. Her first priority after hitting the jackpot was to quite her “nasty, dirty job” as a supervisor at the Aquatic Bathware.
Once she came home from the night shift, Leach woke up her boyfriend Vaughn Avery to share the life-changing news. They set in the living room for hours laughing and crying, while around 4:30 a.m. Avery said that “he needed to get ready for work”, but his partner replied with “Are you crazy? We don't have to work anymore!” Early retirement isn’t the couple’s only plan – they will also use the money to pay off their bills, travel and buy a new house.
3. Retiree collects the largest prize in Illinois lottery history
First Mega Millions jackpot won in 2015 was also the largest one – it was collected by Jesus Davila Jr from Naperville who matched all the winning Mega Millions numbers on January 16th to win $265.000.000. There was a bit of controversy surrounding his win after it was reported that the 70-year-old millionaire served 12 years in prison for a 1994 felony charge of manufacturing and delivery of cocaine. His spokesman Robert Kolt confirmed it, but added that Davila had never been in trouble since and that he had paid his debt to society.
4. Friends share $262.000.000 after playing together for over a decade
The second largest prize in Illinois lottery history was also won this year and it was only slightly smaller than the previous one. It was shared by two Blue Island residents John Williams and Neal Logue who have been occasionally buying lottery tickets together for the past twelve years. Their patience finally paid off on June 2nd when the two friends scooped the $262.000.000 Mega Millions prize.
5. Lucky Duck Passive Trust claims $202.000.000
The last Mega Millions jackpot of the year was won back on November 13th by a winner who has chosen to shield their identity by collecting the prize via trust. The Lucky Duck Passive Trust from Columbus claimed the cheque on behalf of the mysterious punter who won $202.000.000 by matching the numbers 17, 18, 31, 35, 59 with the Mega Ball 9.
