Superstition dictates that Friday the 13th is unlucky, but many jackpot winners beg to differ because this day brought them nothing but good fortune. Drawings of several games, including Mega Millions and Euromillions, take place on Friday night and it’s sometimes impossible to avoid the number 13, but history has proven that miracles can happen any day – and Friday the 13th is no exception. Put all the superstition aside in the next Mega Millions drawing!
One of the largest jackpots of the year 2015 was scooped by a player from Columbus, Ohio who won an astounding $202.000.000 Mega Millions prize on November 13th. Not much is known about the winner, since they decided to shield their identity by claiming the prize via the Lucky Duck Passive Trust.
2. Francisco Delgado Rodríguez (€121.000.000)
The Spanish baker Francisco Delgado Rodríguez isn’t the winner of the largest Euromillions prize won on Friday the 13th, but he’s one of the few whose identity is known to the public. Rodríguez was 30 years old when he hit a €121.000.000 jackpot five years ago, and shortly after that he left his hometown of Pilas. His former neighbours have no clue where Rodríguez and his family are now, but it was rumoured he purchased a house in Miami and a luxury duplex in central Seville, worth over €1.000.000.
3. Kelsey Zachow ($66.000.000)
Kelsey Zachow from Michigan had been buying lottery tickets two times a week for five years, before luck finally smiled on her in June 2014. Despite being very young – only 24 years old, in fact – Zachow made several smart choices after winning $66.000.000, such as hiring a financial advisor and a lawyer. First thing on her agenda was setting up saving’s fund for her 7-month-old son Benjamin, her boyfriend’s daughter, and her 2-year-old brother. After that was done, Zachow intended to do some traveling across Europe and buy the house of her dreams in the St. Clair area.
4. Kendall Warren ($27.000.000)
Friday the 13th seems to be a perfect day for playing the lottery in Michigan, and the story of Kendall Warren’s win is another proof. The Kalamazoo resident matched all the winning numbers in Mega Millions drawing on November 2011, becoming $27.000.000 richer. He was 61 at the time and didn’t feel like retiring just yet, although his co-workers were quietly betting on how long he will keep the job. His wish list after the win didn’t include anything extravagant – just small things that make life worth living like enjoyment and taking care of his family.
5. Isabel Zelaya ($26.000.000)
Zelaya was a night shift worker for the Hicksville-based Coral Graphics Services when he scooped a $26.000.000 Mega Millions prize in May 2009. The aspiring restaurateur said the win finally provided him with an opportunity to “be his own boss”. He bought the winning ticket despite his friends’ advice not to do so, since it was Friday the 13th.
“I knew it was my lucky day no matter what the calendar said. I’m living proof that luck trumps superstition,” explained the confident winner after picking up his prize.
