New Jersey family of eight shares $429.000.000 Powerball prize

Only a week after hitting a $429.000.000 Powerball jackpot, the 70-year old Pearlie Smith and her seven children came forward to claim this miraculous windfall. The members of the lucky family are still getting used to the reality of becoming millionaires, but they intend to donate a significant amount of money to their church and help their community. Ms. Smith and her adult children Valerie, Marsha, Steven, Jacqueline, Tracy, Katherine and Rene spent $6 on lottery tickets for the Powerball drawing on May 7th. When Marsha realized their ticket matched all the winning numbers, she called her sister Valerie to share the news, but she had a hard time convincing her they’ve just become $429.000.000 richer.

“I said, ‘Stop April fooling me and get off my phone,’ and she said ‘I’m not, it’s May,’” recalled Valerie Arthur.

The family chose to receive the prize as a lump sum payment valued at $284.000.000, which will be split evenly between the eight of them. Numbers that enabled their amazing victory were 5, 25, 26, 44 and 66 with the Power Ball 9 and Ms. Arthur said they’ve picked them by divine intervention, after they came to her mother in a dream.

They plan to use some of the money for charitable causes and donate 10% to the church. Ms. Arthur didn’t mention any specific organizations, but she talked about her sister’s struggle to create mentoring program for young women at risk. Katherine has been trying to get funding for her project for a long time, but the win will allow her to “change lives on her own accord”.

“It was like affirmation from God, because we each have dreams that we want to fulfil in this life, and do for our community, and do for each other and our families. It was lucky we have been funded to do that,” said Ms. Arthur.
