Three-time Grammy winner scoops a $1.000.000 lottery prize

Many celebrities, including Madonna, George Clooney and Paris Hilton, have admitted to trying their luck with games of chance, but the title of the lottery king among celebrities now belongs to Walter Ostanek. The Canadian polka artist, who has three Grammys under his belt, won a quite different reward a few days ago – an amazing $1.000.000 lotto prize. You don’t have to be super-famous to win millions. Ostanek has been playing lottery for decades, and said this is the first time he’s won something more than “100 bucks or a pair of binoculars.” He won $1.000.000 in The London Dream Lottery, where proceeds from ticket sales benefit local hospitals in Canada. Despite being a well-known artist in his home country, Ostanek reacted to the news pretty much the same as any other lottery winner.

“I didn’t believe it at first, because it was a friend of mine who told me, and he always jokes around with me,” said the lucky man, who performed for the veterans at Parkwood Institute during his cheque presentation.

Even though Ostanek has made a comfortable living recording and playing polka music, he’s nowhere near super-rich and this prize really came in the perfect moment. He said he will use it to take care of the family and pay for the nursing home expenses for his wife Irene, who is suffering from dementia.

“It’s bad that’s she is not here with me, but we did a lot of things together. She was a big support of mine. We were married for 59 years, so we did something right,” said Canada’s Polka King.
