Protecting your identity after a major lotto victory can be very tricky, but a £1.000.000 winner from Jamaica found the perfect solution. This woman showed up to collect her enormous windfall while wearing an emoji mask, which isn’t that uncommon in her country.
According to Simone Clarke-Cooper, assistant vice-president of the company behind the Jamaican Super Lotto game, winners in this country often collect their prizes in disguise. They do it to keep themselves safe and lottery officials are supportive of their choice.
“We are not going to tell them not to do that because their safety is of paramount importance to us as well. They usually don’t need our help, and they are usually very creative, perhaps beyond anything that we could think of or imagine, and it has been very effective over the years,” explained Clarke-Cooper.
The £1.000.000 jackpot was collected by a woman identified as N. Gray who bought the winning ticket for the Jamaican game Super Lotto on May 11th. She started playing the lottery in January because she was drowning in debt and felt elated after finding out she’ll finally be able to get rid of it. That’s part of the reason why Gray covered her face with a bright yellow emoji mask – she didn’t want anyone bothering her for cash, unless she’s ready to offer it on her own.
“I want to clear my debt, invest and I want to do some traveling. I would like to construct a community centre for the youths in my community, so they can engage in something productive; somewhere where they can do information technology,” said the anonymous winner.
