Which is the Best European Lottery?

In many European countries online lottery is legal and widely practiced, and this has led to a widespread acceptance of lotteries across the continent. Some of these are specific to the countries in which they are based but can be played online in other countries, such as the Irish Lotto and the UK National Lottery. The biggest and best European lotteries are the ones that welcome players from all countries and regularly pay out tens of millions of Euros to winners from across the continent.

In this guide we will look for the best Euro lottery by comparing best that European players have at their disposal.

EuroMillions

The Euromillions was first launched in 2004 as a joint enterprise between the leading lottery organizers from the United Kingdom, France, and Spain. These three countries are the biggest players of this European lottery and in the early days they were the only ones, but now players from Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Switzerland can also play.

EuroMillions Statistics

  • Price: €3.50
  • Minimum Jackpot: €17 Million
  • Maximum Jackpot: €190 Million
  • Day of Draw: Tuesdays and Fridays (in Paris)
  • Numbers: 5 Main Numbers (from 1 to 50); 2 Lucky Stars (from 1 to 12).

You can play EuroMillions even if you are a tourist in one of these countries. There is no restriction with regards to nationality and if you can buy a lottery ticket and are of legal age, then you can play EuroMillions. This has how Multilotto offers EuroMillions participation for players who do not reside in any of the 7 EuroMillions countries.

Your odds of winning EuroMillions jackpot are 1 in 139,838,160, and your odds of winning the smallest prize (2 Main Numbers) are 1 in 22. These may not seem like great odds, but for a lottery of this size they are not bad. The odds of winning the Powerball and the Mega Millions in the United States, for instance, are twice this amount.

EuroJackpot

The EuroJackpot lottery was launched in 2012, some 8 years after the EuroMillions. It was seen as a way for countries that were not a part of the EuroMillions to gain access to a lottery that was just as big and just as rewarding.

Players from 18 countries can participate in the Eurojackpot and only one of these, Spain, also participates in the EuroMillions.

EuroJackpot Statistics

  • Price: €2.50
  • Minimum Jackpot: €10 Million
  • Maximum Jackpot: €90 Million
  • Day of Draw: Friday (in Helsinki)
  • Numbers: 5 Main Numbers (from 1 to 50); 2 Extra Numbers (from 1 to 10).

At the time of writing the EuroJackpot has reached its maximum amount on three separate occasions, being won by players in Finland, Germany, and the Czech Republic respectively.

EuroMillions vs EuroJackpot

Your odds of winning the Eurojackpot are much greater than your odds of winning the EuroMillions and the lower prizes are also designed to pay out more frequently. This is great for the odds-seekers, but it’s not great for players who love big prizes and that includes us.

We have to give this one to the EuroMillions because not only are the EuroMillions jackpots much bigger on average and as a maximum, but the same goes for the lower prizes and there are also many more country-specific prizes. It is true that the lines are a little more expensive, but in some countries this gets you an additional shot at being a millionaire.

For that reason and the other reasons mentioned above, we think that the EuroMillions deserves to be ahead of the EuroJackpot when it comes to the best euro lottery.

But there are still other top lotteries to consider.

SuperEnalotto

SuperEnaLotto is an Italian lottery that was adapted from the old “enalotto”, which has been around since the 1950s. Up until June 2009 the SuperEnalotto had one of the most unique ways of being drawn, with each individual number coming from a different draw in a different city.

This meant that it was possible for the same number to be drawn twice, even though it was not possible to pick the same number twice. When this happened, the jackpot would automatically rollover.

SuperEnaLotto Statistics

  • Price: €1.50
  • Minimum Jackpot: €2 Million
  • Maximum Jackpot: None
  • Day of Draw: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays
  • Numbers: 6 Numbers

Although the SuperEnalotto isn’t one of the better known lotteries across Europe, it does have some big benefits. It is cheap, at just 1 EURO per line, it has some sizable jackpots, and it also has some of the best odds of any Euro lottery jackpot. This combination of cheap lines, good odds and big jackpots is rare and it makes the SuperEnalotto a standout lottery.

The highest amount ever won on this Italian lottery was just under €180 million, and there have been several more wins over €150 million, even though the minimum jackpot is just €2 million.

Irish Lottery

The Irish Lottery is popular across the United Kingdom, with many players from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland preferring it to their own National Lottery and with many sportsbooks and lottery sites offering plays.

That’s because the odds are good, the lines are cheap and the jackpots can reach amounts greater than €10 million with relative ease.

Irish Lottery Statistics

  • Price: €2.00
  • Minimum Jackpot: €2 Million
  • Maximum Jackpot: None
  • Day of Draw: Wednesdays and Saturdays
  • Numbers: 6 Main Numbers

However, for all of the positives of the Irish Lotto there are a few negatives. The jackpots are nowhere near as high as other European lotteries and this is turning players away. Player numbers are on the decline and while the organizers are trying to stop this decline by offering new games, it doesn't seem to be working.

SuperEnalotto vs Irish Lottery

As good as the Irish Lottery is, it doesn’t quite come compare to the SuperEnalotto. This is a win for the Italians over the Irish in the Euro lottery stakes, because the odds, the jackpots and the prices are just so much better on the SuperEnalotto.

Other Notable European Lotteries

Before we discuss the two Euro lotteries that have made it to our final selection, there are a few that didn’t quite make it onto our list but still deserve a mention:

UK National Lottery: A big lottery in the UK that is also attached to games like Thunderball.

Spanish Lottery: “El Gordo”, as it is known, is a Christmas lottery with huge prizes.

6aus49: A Germany lottery with some big jackpots.

The Best Euro Lottery: EuroMillions vs SuperEnalotto

SuperEnalotto beats the Irish Lottery and all other country-specific lotteries and EuroMillions beats EuroJackpot and all other pan-European lotteries. But which is the better of these two lotteries?

Well, if we compare prices, smaller prizes and chances of winning then it’s the SuperEnalotto all of the way. However, this is a lottery, not a game of poker, and in reality people don’t care that much about the odds of winning a jackpot. As far as the average player is concerned, odds of 100 million to 1 are no different to 200 million to 1, because in both cases they stand little chance of winning and require nothing short of a miracle.

But it’s the “it could be me factor” that makes them worthwhile and exciting, and based on this factor and the potential that the EuroMillions has to change more lives more times a week, it is this Euro lottery that wins it for us.

That doesn’t mean that all of the other lotteries are somehow not very good, because we would still recommend playing them, but in terms of the biggest and the best we can’t look further than the EuroMillions.
